MVC Championship Central | Individual Draws | Order of Play
 
SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's tennis team saw five players advance in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Tennis Championships at Cooper Tennis Complex on Friday.
 
Anna Alons started off singles action in the second flight, defeating Valparaiso's Claire Czerwonka in two sets, 6-2, 6-1, to earn a spot in tomorrow's round.
 
In the third flight, Fati Khamissi broke a second set tie breaker to slip past Northern Iowa's Harri Proudfoot 7-6, 8-6 (7-5). She will face Drake's Liza Petushkova in tomorrow's round.
 
The Bears continued to dominate, taking victories in the following two flights. Ellie Burger won 6-4, 6-2 in flight four, while Clara Gandara Gonzalez cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory in flight five.
 
Newcomer Brooke Smith rounded out the singles winners beating UNI's Morganne Borsh 6-2, 6-2 in flight seven.
 
"Today was a strong start for us," said head coach Mallory Weber. "I'm happy with how we were able to compete and get through matches, and tomorrow will be another opportunity to push through and keep advancing."
 
Missouri State found success in doubles with the tandem of Burger and Alons taking the 6-2 victory in flight one, and Alye Darter and Mara Presot secured another second round spot for the Bears with a 6-4 decision in the third flight.
 
Action will resume at Cooper Tennis Complex on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 9 a.m.
