NORMAL, ILL. – Goalkeeper
Kaitlin Maxwell's performance pushed her into the record books as the Missouri State women's soccer team (8-9-2, 2-3-2 MVC) fell 1-0 to Illinois State in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Soccer Championships Sunday afternoon.
Â
Abby Basler's go-ahead score at the 75-minute mark broke the scoreless tie and lifted the Redbirds (8-8-1, 5-1-1 MVC) to the win and a spot in the MVC Championships semifinal match.
Â
Maxwell collected 10 saves to end the season with 112, moving her into the No. 5 position for single season saves in program history. Her effort surpassed Beth Schneider, who totaled 104 in 1996. It was the fourth time this season Maxwell tallied a double-digit save count.
"I am encouraged by the effort and toughness we brought to the game," said Head Coach
Rob Brewer. "We hope to continue to improve this spring and have a chance to compete for a championship next fall."
Â
Missouri State bombarded the Redbirds early, taking six shots in the opening 30 minutes, but none of them hit the mark. The Bears would end the half with eight shots, and both teams would head into intermission locked 0-0.
Â
Anna Durnin,
Jordan Eickelman, and
Kayleigh Putnam provided a 1-2-3 punch for the Bears, but their efforts were denied as Illinois State's Haley Smith logged a pair of saves while Eickelman's shot hit the crossbar.
Â
The Bears finish the season 8-9-2, going 2-3-2 in league play.
