CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Missouri State matched a season high with 67 kills and hit .280 as a team Saturday in a 3-1 (25-15, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18) victory over Southern Illinois inside Davies Gym.
Chloe Rear dished out a career-high 55 assists, the most for an MSU freshman since Chenille Bayless had 59 in the 2000 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament against Indiana State, while adding five kills on .714 hitting.
Laynie Dake hit .423 with a career-high 14 kills,
Amelia Flynn registered her eighth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 13 digs, and
Ashley Ophoven added 13 kills.
Gerri Idos tied a career high with three service aces.
Ophoven and Dake had six kills apiece in the first set, combining to hit .556 in the comfortable win. Ophoven grouped four kills together to help MSU (12-12, 5-6 MVC) gain a 13-10 lead, and Dake had three during a 6-0 run that ended with the Bears ahead 20-12. Missouri State had 18 total kills and hit .333 in the period.
The second set was tied seven times to 12-12 when Dake scored a kill and Idos followed with consecutive aces for a 15-12 lead. MSU's third ace of the set, this one by Flynn, made it 18-13, and the teams traded 4-0 runs to 22-17. The Salukis got no closer than 22-20 before MSU put it away.
The Bears fell behind 9-6 in the third set and never recovered. Missouri State tied the score at 13 and again at 16, but the Salukis (4-20, 0-11) countered with a big run to earn set point at 24-20. Kills by Rear and
Cambree Villarreal extended the set before SIU scored for the win.
Missouri State used back-to-back blocks to gain an 8-5 lead in the fourth set, growing the margin to 12-6 on a Rear kill and 16-9 after
Aubrey Cheffey scored. The Salukis went on a 6-0 run to make it 16-15, and the Bears answered with a 4-0 run that included two kills and a block from
Alyssa Doucette. MSU kept the lead at four-plus points after that.
Missouri State closes out its four-match road trip with a 6 p.m. Monday contest at Valparaiso (21-6, 8-4).
