Loyola Slips Past Soccer Bears in Defensive Battle

SPRINGFIELD – An overtime goal by visiting Loyola put a damper on senior day for the Missouri State women's soccer team (8-7-2, 2-2-2 MVC), 1-0, here Sunday in the Bears' final home game of the regular season.
 
Madison Kimball's strike at the 98-minute mark broke up a scoreless tie and lifted the Ramblers (8-6-1, 5-1 MVC) to the win and control of first place in the league.
 
Both teams got off to slow offensive starts, each tallying just three shots in the opening half. Forward Jordan Eickelman accounted for two of MSU's three shots in the first 45 minutes, with her first attempt coming up just shy of the goal.
 
Missouri State's fired off eight shots in the second half. Kayleigh Putnam put one on the net at the 61-minute mark, but the play was ruled offsides to keep the contest scoreless. The Bears went on to tally four straight shots from Putnam, Ashley Coonfield, and Anna Durnin, with three sailing wide the fourth saved by the Ramblers.
 
Loyola had a goal omitted due to an offsides infraction at the 75-minute mark. The Bears limited the opposing offense to just five shot attempts in the second half.
 
Bears' goalkeeper Kaitlin Maxwell had another outstanding performance with six saves in the cage, including a game saver in the final 10 minutes of regulation to send the match to overtime.
 
The Ramblers accounted for all three shots in overtime, and a cross pass to Loyola's Madison Kimball, a one-timer from 20 yards out, found its mark for the game winner.
 
Prior to the match, Missouri State honored its four seniors – Masen Stamp, Brooke Prondzinski, Karen Kozol, and Kassie Flynn – in a pregame ceremony. Prondzinski tallied one shot in the game.
 
Missouri State will now head to Des Moines, Iowa to face Drake in its final game of the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 25 starting at 4 p.m. The MVC tournament runs October 28 – November 4.
