Women’s Soccer Facing Valparaiso in Weekend Contest

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's soccer team (7-6-1, 1-1-1 MVC) is heading back out on the road to face Valparaiso in a conference matchup at the Crusaders' Brown Field in Valparaiso, Ind. on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.

Missouri State Quick Kicks
  • The Bears' match against Indiana State last Saturday ended in a 1-1 tie, marking Missouri State's first draw of the season.
  • Freshman Grace Heenan was the Bears' lone goal scorer against Indiana State, slipping it past the goalie at the 41-minute mark.
  • Four Bears have earned Missouri Valley Conference weekly honors so far this season – Jordan Eickelman, Anna Durnin, Kaitlin Maxwell, and Kennady Orlick.
  • Missouri State currently ranks fourth in overall conference standings with a 1-1-1 record. The Bears have four remaining MVC matches this season.
  • Orlick's four game-winning goals leads the MVC. She also ranks 15th nationally in the same category.
  • Coming into this weekend's match, Maxwell has 85 saves, averaging a conference best 6.07 per game. She is tied with Indiana State's Hannah Sullivan and Northern Iowa's Jami Reichenberger in shutouts with five.
  • Maxwell is among the best in the country in total saves, sitting at seventh.
  • Four different players – Eickelman, Orlick, Emma Skornia, and Olina Einarsdottir – have scored multiple goals this year.
Scouting Valparaiso
  • Valparaiso picked up its first conference win of the season against Illinois State, with Caitlyn Oliver and Julia Lehnen both finding the net in the opening half.
  • Cory Griffith leads the Crusaders in goals this season with six, which also is the third highest total in the MVC. Her 47 shots is one shy of Loyola's Jenna Szczesny for second overall in the conference.
  • The Crusaders have a busy schedule ahead, playing three matches in nine days to close out the regular season. 
Series History

Valparaiso:
  • Missouri State holds the 3-1 series advantage over the Crusaders in the revamped rivalry.
  • The Bears' first meeting with Valparaiso dates back to 1997, where Missouri State played them twice during the season. After another match in 1998, the Bears would take a nearly 20-year hiatus before facing them again last year their first contest as MVC opponents.
  • Valparaiso scored a last-minute goal to win, 1-0, its first victory against the Bears last season.
