Omaha, Neb. – Unable to keep Nebraska-Omaha (1-4-1) at bay after regulation play, the Missouri State women's soccer team (2-5-0) dropped a 2-1, overtime decision to the Mavericks, Friday night at Caniglia Field.
Making her second start of the season, sophomore Ashley Coonfield sparked a first-half, offensive onslaught for the Bears as she launched the first shot of the match in the seventh minute. MSU maintained control of the ball, registering three corner kicks and six more shots within the first 20 minutes.
The Bears threatened in the 15th minute as Brooke Prondzinski dribbled the ball up the field and created a one-on-one situation against the Maverick goalkeeper in the box. The junior fired off a shot from the right side of the box but her attempt sailed a mere foot to the left of the goal, ending one of the Bears' major scoring opportunities.
However, Missouri State kept its foot on the gas pedal as sophomore Kayleigh Putnam notched her second goal of the season to put the Bears up, 1-0, mid-way through the first half. The get-ahead goal was set up in the 28th minute when senior Brooke Zimmerman crossed the ball into the top of the box where she connected with Putnam. Putnam squared up and artfully headed the ball into the far side of the goal. The Bears recorded one more shot in the opening 45 minutes and entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Coming back with a vengeance, Omaha's Natalie Johnson equalized the match five minutes into the second half off a successful one-on-one shot from inside the box. The two teams battled back-and-forth for the remaining 40 minutes, but neither team could find a way to put the ball into the net - resulting in the Bears' first overtime scenario of the season.
No scoring attempts were made during the opening four minutes of overtime until freshman Jacqueline Baetz picked up a yellow card just outside the right of the box. As a result, the Mavericks lined up for a free kick and managed to sneak in a header past freshman goalkeeper Kaitlin Maxwell (2-5-0) from 2-yards out to end the match, 2-1.
Missouri State ended the contest with 15 shot attempts and five shots on goal. Coonfield led MSU with four shots while three Bears – Baetz, Prondzinski and Rachel Catrell – tallied two shots apiece.
Scoring Summary
The Bears conclude their road stint Sunday at 1 p.m., taking on the SIUE Cougars at Edwardsville, Ill. Live stats and a live stream will be available for the match.
