TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Two early goals and a strong defensive effort aided the Missouri State women's soccer team (5-8, 1-1 MVC) in its 2-1, conference victory over Indiana State, Thursday evening at Memorial Stadium.
Â
Indiana State took the first shot of the match and managed to string together two more against starting goalkeeper
Kaitlin Maxwell before
Brooke Zimmerman took MSU's first scoring attempt of the night. Zimmerman's spark helped the Bears maintain control of the ball for the majority of the opening half.Â
Â
Just before the 10 minute mark, the Bears made a break down the field, putting instant pressure on the Indiana State defense. Dribbling up the field, sophomore
Ashley Coonfield laced a pass through the middle to
Brooke Prondzinski who found the left side of the net to put the Bears up, 1-0.
Â
Missouri State scored again late in the 19
th minute as Zimmerman found success for her third goal of the season. The senior received the ball in the box from
Rachel Catrell and quickly fired off a shot. An unfortunate Sycamore defender fell right on top of the ball and Zimmerman was awarded the goal, giving MSU a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Two minutes before the end of the first half, Indiana State put a goal up on the board as Tessa Leong made a sliding effort and poked the ball past Maxwell. Out-shooting the Sycamores 13-9 in the first 45 minutes, the Bears held off Indiana State for the remainder of the half to hold on to their 2-1 lead.
Â
Freshman
Lexi Palacio took over the Missouri State goal coming out of halftime and kept the Sycamores at bay for the remainder of the match.
