CONWAY, Ark. – The Missouri State women's tennis team kicked off the 2017-18 season with a competitive first day of the UCA Fall Invitational on Friday, Sept. 22.
 
"Overall, today was a good first day of our season," said Missouri State women's tennis head coach Mallory Weber. "We've been working on doubles all fall and I saw progress today.
 
"In singles, it's tough to play five three-set matches, but I like how competitive we are for day one," Weber continued.
 
Junior Phoebe Boeschen collected the singles victory for the Bears, defeating Northeastern State's Easton Parker, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6. The Columbia, Mo., native would fall in the quarterfinal match to UCA's Chunan Xiang, 6-2, 7-5.
 
Boeschen teamed up with senior Anelisse Torrico Moreno to collect a 6-3, win in the back doubles draw over Northeastern State's CJ Boydston and Emma Wornok. The MSU pair fell in the opening doubles draw to Arkansas State's Shelby King and Sabina Jeresic, 6-2.
 
Freshman Ellie Burger and sophomore Alye Darter collected a first round 6-2 victory over Southeastern Missouri State's Kseniya Zonova and Anais Emilie. The Bears' duo then fell to UCA's Amiru Shimoguchi and Xiang, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
 
Day two of the UCA Fall Invitational will begin on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 9 a.m. at UCA Tennis Courts with singles play while doubles will start approximately at 1:30 p.m. For more information on the Missouri State women's tennis team go to www.missouristatebears.com or twitter (@msubearstennis).
