Bears Position Preview: Running Backs
Letterwinners returning/lost: 3/1; Starters returning/lost: 1/0
  • Three lettermen return to the Missouri State backfield to help bolster a Bears' ground game that posted positive results last fall as part of a much-improved offensive unit; MSU averaged 128.5 yards per game and 3.6 yards per carry in 2016, totaling eight touchdowns as a group under the direction of third-year assistant Munir Prince
  • Senior Calan Crowder enters his final collegiate campaign with 1,419 career rushing yards to his credit after rushing for 351 yards and a team-high four touchdowns last fall; he made five starts overall and rushed for 131 yards and three scores in the Bears' road win over a ranked Indiana State squad.
  • Junior Jason Randall logged a team-high 459 rushing yards and a pair of TDs last fall, as well as 17 catches, 147 yards and two more scores as a receiver to lead all MSU backs; he needs 162 additional yards on the ground to give the Bears a pair of 1,000-yard rushers.
  • Fourth-year junior Nick Masoner also returns after finishing as the Bears' third-leading rusher a season ago; he averaged 6.6 yards per carry and posted a career-best 132 yards on 13 carries in MSU's 2016 season opener.
  • A pair of new faces will join the fray in the MSU backfield, with redshirt freshman Austin Lee and true freshman Myron Mason looking to make a push for playing time; Lee averaged 143.4 yards per game and totaled 25 touchdowns as a prep senior at Memphis CBC High School, while Mason turned in a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons for Denton (Texas) Guyer High.
