-- Missouri State tennis players Abbey Belote
and Fati Khamissi
were recognized Tuesday for their work in the classroom as honorable mention selections to Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team.
A junior from Springfield, Belote carries a 3.74 cumulative grade point average while pursuing an exercise and movement science/pre-physical therapy degree with a minor in biomedical sciences. She has seven singles and four doubles wins on the year, playing as high as No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles and going unbeaten at each of those spots.
Khamissi, a sophomore from Rabat, Morocco, owns a 3.83 GPA in cell and molecular biology. She has six dual wins this spring, playing almost exclusively at No. 2 singles, and eight overall singles wins to go with seven doubles victories on the full season.
The Bears take the No. 7 seed into this weekend's MVC Team Tennis Championship in Normal, Ill., and open play Friday at 9 a.m. against second-seeded Southern Illinois.
The criteria for the MVC's Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Capital One Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average (4.0 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were not eligible), must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution and must have played in 75 percent of their team's contests.
