Junior Verena Gimmy fired a three-under-par 69 Sunday (Apr. 16) to pace Missouri State to the lead after the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship in Cape Girardeau, Mo. As a team, the Bears shot 302 and hold a six-shot advantage over second-place Bradley (308) and third-place Northern Iowa (310). Defending champion Wichita State is fourth with 313, followed by Loyola (315), Illinois State (317), Southern Illinois (318), Indiana State (320), Drake (325) and Evansville (330).

Gimmy, a native of Neuss, Germany, posted her career-best round on the strength of five birdies in her trip around the par 72, 6214-yard layout at Dalhousie Golf Club and has a three-shot lead over Marissa Uradamo of Indiana State and Evansville's Kayla Katterhenry. Senior Caroline Boone is second for MSU and tied for sixth overall after carding a 75, while sophomores Ashley Childers and Rachel Johnson each posted 79 and are tied for 18th. Junior Stine Pettersen is tied for 39th after shooting 84.

"I'm so proud of our team for battling the way we did today," said Bears' coach Kevin Kane. "We had several people get off to a bad start and it could have gotten away from us, but we fought back and did a lot of grinding today."

MVC officials have moved the scheduled start for Monday's second round back to a 1 p.m. shotgun start due to expected stormy weather in the area in the morning.
