EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Missouri State won five of its six singles matches Sunday afternoon to earn a 5-2 neutral court victory over Western Illinois.
"I'm very proud of the way we fought back and competed in singles," MSU head coach
Mallory Weber said after the match. "The conditions were tough outside today and we handled it very well. This is a great boost going into Tuesday."
The Bears (5-10) faced an uphill climb after WIU (6-11) claimed the doubles point, but quickly took the lead after
Phoebe Boeschen and
Alye Darter earned straight set victories at Nos. 5 and 1 singles, respectively.
Senior
Ekaterina Donetskova made it 3-1 Bears with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the fourth spot, and the Leathernecks remained alive with a win in the No. 6 match.
Anelisse Torrico Moreno the sealed the win for MSU with a come-from-behind victory at No. 3 singles, rallying from a 6-2 loss in the first set to win the next two frames, 6-2, 6-1.
Fati Khamissi followed with a three-set win in the second flight, taking the final frame by a 6-2 count.
MSU continues its road trip Tuesday afternoon at Oral Roberts.
