UNI Scrapes Out Extra-Inning Win over Softball Bears

Box Score | Season Stats

UNI 3, Missouri State 2 (8 innings)

SPRINGFIELD – UNI leadoff hitter Brittney Krodinger scored on an eighth-inning wild pitch to lift the visiting Panthers past Missouri State, 3-2, in the finale of the three-game Missouri Valley Conference softball series between the two clubs.

UNI (14-11, 2-1 MVC) loaded the bases in the top of the eighth on three straight singles before a wild pitch by MSU reliever Erin Griesbauer brought home the go-ahead run with nobody out. Junior Holly Kelley then came in the game with a 2-2 count on Panthers' cleanup hitter Kennedy Bailey. Kelley struck out Bailey and then helped turn a 1-3-2 double play to end the Panthers' threat.

Missouri State (13-11, 1-2) got a two-out single from Elena Gambill in the bottom of the eighth, but could not chase her home with UNI's Alyssa Buchanan (6-1) earning the victory with 5.2 innings of relief with 5 strikeouts.

The Bears struck first with a second-inning RBI single by Olivia Roark that plated Gambill with two outs.

Northern Iowa responded with a bunt single in the top of the third by Brittney Roby to tie the game, 1-1.

That score held until the fourth when Jaci Spencer slammed a solo homer to right that gave the Panthers a 2-1 advantage.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, catcher Darian Frost brought the Bears back with an inside-the-park homer to right field past the diving Macey Wolfe. Frost's blast was her third round-tripper of the season and the first-ever inside-the-park homer at Killian Stadium.

Bears' starter Kaitlin Beason went 5.0 innings and allowed just one earned run and no walks in a no-decision. Gambill and Roark had two-hit games to pace the MSU offense.

Missouri State stranded eight runners, including six in the first three innings, to drop their second straight to UNI after winning the series opener, 6-0, early Saturday.

MSU continues its seven-game home stand Tuesday at 5 p.m. against SEC rival Arkansas at Killian Stadium.
