The Ten Count
- Missouri State's 7 single-possession losses this season (losses by 3 points or less) is second-most in the nation, trailing only Mercer's 8 close losses among DI programs. Five of the Bears close losses have come in MVC play.
- With 253 3-pointers this season, the Bears have set a new single-season program high, surpassing the 2009-10 team's 252 triples. MSU's 140 treys in Valley play is also a single-season record for threes in conference games.
- Alize Johnson (Jr., Williamsport, Pa.) continues to lead The Valley with 10.5 rebounds per game. He ranks 15th nationally in double-doubles (15) and 12th in rebounds per game. He has 19 double-figure rebound games this year.
- Dequon Miller (Sr., Charleston, W.Va.) is coming off a career high 26 points at Bradley. He is 8 points shy of 800 for his two-year career. Miller ranks 50th in MSU career scoring and is averaging 14.7 ppg in MVC play (6th).
- MSU's 12 losses by 9 points or less this campaign matches an all-time high in the 105-year history of the program. The 2001-02 and 2011-12 Bears also lost a dozen games by single digits.
- Chris Kendrix (Jr., Willard, Mo.) is 2 points shy of 700 for his career.
- Obediah Church (So., Springfield, Ill.) leads the MVC and ranks 19th nationally in blocked shots per game (2.50). He is also 15th in total blocks (70), which is the second-highest season total in MSU history (Danny Moore 84 in 1999).
- Since the MVC began recognizing Newcomers of the Week in 2003-04, only one player -- seven-time winner Doug McDermott of Creighton (2010-11) -- has won the rookie honor more times than MSU's Johnson (now a 6x winner).
- Jarrid Rhodes (Jr., Palmetto, Fla.) has scored in double figures in three straight games and is averaging 14.0 points per game in that span with 8 threes. He has started 24 straight games and has made 17 straight free throws. Â
- During their Division I era, the Bears are 31-3 on Senior Day, including a 6-2 mark at JQH Arena. Only Valparaiso (1989), Creighton (2009) and Indiana State (2012) have beaten MSU on a DI Senior Night. The last time MSU played a ranked opponent on senior day was an 86-83 win over No. 20 Drake in 2007-08.
Series History
The series between the Bears and Shockers dates back to the 1941-42 season with Wichita State holding a 40-30 advantage.
WSU has won the last 13 meetings since MSU's memorable home win over the Shockers to clinch the MVC regular-season crown on Feb. 26, 2011 at JQH Arena. The Bears are 20-11 all-time against WSU at home, including a 2-6 mark at JQH Arena.
Earlier this season in Wichita (Feb. 9), the Shockers used the momentum of a solid first half to turn back visiting Missouri State, 80-62, with the Bears outscoring WSU by nine in the second half.
The Bears were led by
Chris Kendrix and
Alize Johnson with 11 points apiece. Kendrix and
Obediah Church also matched game highs with 7 rebounds as MSU out-rebounded the Shockers by a 41-34 margin for the game.
Wichita State, which was led by 13 points from Shaquille Morrs, used a 17-2 run midway through the first half to push ahead for good.Â
Scouting the Shockers
Tenth-year head coach Gregg Marshall returns nine lettermen and two starters from a 26-9 NCAA Tournament club that went 16-2 (first) in the MVC. WSU is 9-1 in true road games this season. Sophomore Markis McDuffie (F, 6-8) leads the Shockers with 11.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while junior Dorral Willis (F, 6-9) averages 10.3 and 5.2 boards. Freshman Landry Shamet (G, 6-4) also averages 11.0 points with a team-high 59 3-pointers. WSU is scoring 82.4 points per game with 40.9 rebounds per night.
