ST. LOUIS – After turning in a career day for the Bears against UNI Saturday, Missouri State linebacker
Angelo Garbutt has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Sunday.
A sophomore transfer from Carrollton, Texas, Garbutt logged an afternoon to remember in helping the Bears limit UNI to 116 second-half yards and just three points after intermission. He posted a Missouri State season-high 17 tackles to go along with a sack, 1.5 total tackles for losses and two quarterback hurries in the 25-10 setback to UNI.
Garbutt, who joined two-time honoree
Peyton Huslig on the Bears' list of 2017 MVFC Newcomers of the Week, enters the final week of the season as the Bears' leading tackler with 77 in 10 games. The Iowa transfer's 17 stops Saturday marked his third-consecutive double-digit tackle performance and matched the fourth-best single-game tackle total by a Valley defender this season.Â
The Bears (3-7, 2-5 MVFC) will conclude the 2017 season with an 11 a.m. (CST) game at Youngstown State next Saturday (Nov. 18).
