EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Missouri State's
Lily Johnson and
Lynsey Wright combined for 36 kills on .408 hitting Friday in leading the volleyball Bears to a 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 25-18) victory at Evansville.
Missouri State improved to 19-5 overall and 11-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play, extending its win streaks to 12 matches overall, 27 in MVC play and 19 on the road.
Johnson's 23 kills (on .408 hitting) equaled a career high for a three-set match and catapulted her into the top 40 on the NCAA career kills set, while she added 12 digs for her 74th career double-double. Wright's 13 kills moved her past Calli Norman for the No. 12 spot in MSU history, while she exceeded a .400 attack efficiency for the 34th time in her career.
The Bears did not lead the first set until the very end, escaping with a 27-25 victory. Evansville (9-14, 3-8) took an early 6-2 lead, and MSU tied the score three times before the Aces regained the momentum to lead 19-14. The Bears fought off a pair of set points when an Evansville error gave them their initial lead at 26-25, and Johnson's ninth kill gave MSU the win.
With the exception of a 3-1 score in favor of the Bears, the second set played out much like the first, with Evansville grabbing a 10-5 advantage this time and Missouri State playing catch-up. The Bears tied the score at 19, 21 and 22 before taking a 23-22 lead on an Evansville error. UE scored for a 23-all tie, and Johnson and Wright closed out the win with consecutive kills.
Missouri State avoided the slow start in the third set, taking a 7-2 lead and keeping the margin at two points or more for the rest of the match. Johnson added nine more kills in the final set as the Bears hit .400 as a team with 26 digs and four blocks.
