SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Despite a 1-0 setback to Miami (Ohio), the Missouri State defense shined holding the Mid-American Conference preseason champion to just one goal in Friday afternoon's match here at Betty and Bobby Allison North Stadium.
Miami recorded the first shot of the game in the sixth minute where Missouri State starting goalkeeper
Feli Heinzel made a key save, her first of five, to keep the RedHawks off the board. Heinzel followed that with two critical, consecutive saves to keep the score even at zero.
On a Miami drive in the 10
th minute, senior defender
Brynne Satre made a successful diving effort to prevent a shot from the RedHawks. Junior
Paige Pashea teamed up with Satre, making several pivotal stops in the backfield for Missouri State.
The Bears, who were unable to get a shot off in the first half, were outshot 8-0 by the RedHawks with Heinzel finishing the first half with five saves to head into halftime tied 0-0.
In the 44
th minute of the game, senior goalkeeper
Megan Drew (0-2) made essential, back-to-back saves to hold Miami at zero. Missouri State kept the RedHawks off the board for 27 minutes in the second half before Miami's Mariona Heras netted her second goal of the season off a penalty corner in the 62
nd minute of the match.
The Bear's only shot of the match came from freshman
Marina Ellison, who was blocked on a shot from the left side. The RedHawks recorded a total of 23 shots and 11 shots on goal during the match.
Heinzel and Drew combined for 10 saves, each recording five in the cage.
Notable Performances
Feli Heinzel – The Bears' everyday goalkeeper, Heinzel finished the match with 5 saves during the first half. Her first three saves were huge stops for the Bears and her efforts kept the match 0-0 heading into the second half.
Megan Drew – Despite one goal allowed, Drew was strong defensively for the Bears as she recorded five saves in the second half of the match. Before the RedHawks scored, the senior recorded four saves including back-to-back stops in a huge defensive effort for Missouri State.
Brynne Satre – Satre led the Missouri State back line, making several diving plays to prevent forward progression for the RedHawks. Satre put in a season-high 70 minutes for the Bears.
