Bears Preseason Preview: Cornerbacks

Bears Preseason Preview: Cornerbacks

Letterwinners returning/lost: 3/2
Starters returning/lost: 0/2
  • With the departure of both of their regular starting cornerbacks from 2015, the Bears will utilize a blend of youth and experience to fill the void in 2016, with cornerbacks coach Marcus Yokeley expected to call on three returning letterwinners and a pair of newcomers to carry the load this fall.
  • Junior Darius (Ivy) Daniel and sophomore Matt Rush are the most seasoned members of the Bears' cornerback group, bringing six combined career starts into the 2016 campaign.
  • Rush logged 27 total tackles, including 20 unassistaed stops, and two pass break-ups, while Daniel accounted for 21 tackles, two PBU's and an interception last fall.
  • Sophomore Robert Thomas could see an expanded role this fall after appearing in six games and making 10 tackles as a true freshman.
  • Darius Joseph will also be called upon to play a role in Bears' secondary plans; the redshirt freshman made six tackles and broke up a pass in MSU's spring game.
  • Additionally, junior transfer JaMario McClendon joins the MSU defensive backfield following a standout junior college career at Butler (Kan.) CC.
