TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Bradley rode an early offensive outburst and the pitching of Cameron Roegner to hand Missouri State a 10-0 setback Thursday evening, halting the Bears' six-game win streak on day two of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship at Bob Warn Field.
Roegner faced the minimum number of MSU hitters through the first four frames and limited the Bears to four hits overall in a seven-inning complete-game effort. Roegner, who held the Bears scoreless for the first eight innings of a 2-1 win in Peoria on April 9, fanned five to notch his second win over MSU in 2016.
Luke Mangieri went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored to lead a BU offense that tallied 10 hits and drew 12 walks-a season high for MSU pitching. Ian Kristan chipped in with three RBIs while going 2-for-3 with two walks, and Spencer Gaa recorded hits in each of his first two plate appearances to help spur the Braves' early onslaught.
Bradley wasted no time in building its advantage, cashing in on back-to-back hits from Mangieri and Gaa and a pair of walks to touch up MSU starter Jake Fromson for three first-inning runs. Paul Solka brought in the first run of the night with a sacrifice fly to right, before Kristan's two-out single plated two more for a 3-0 BU lead.
The following frame brought more of the same, as the first three Braves reached base safely to extend the margin to five runs. After Fromson beaned Bradly Wilkin, Mangieri drove a run-scoring triple to deep center, before Gaa's second hit chased him home to make it a 5-0 contest.
Given the commanding lead, Roegner (7-3) cruised through the first four innings, allowing only singles to Spencer Johnson in the first and Eduardo Castro in the second. Two of the three BU double plays in the game erased those early threats, however, and MSU would not register another hit until Jeremy Eierman's leadoff hit to start the fifth.
The Braves (29-19) struck again with a big fourth inning, doubling their lead with a five-spot against Dylan Coleman, who relieved Fromson in the third. A single by Tyler Leffler, followed by a run-scoring double by Solka started the rally, and the first of two MSU errors in the inning on Evan Gruener's bunt fueled the fire. Another run-producing hit by Kristan and a bunt single by D.J. Gasso kept the inning alive, before a misplay on a fly to left allowed three more Bradley runs to score, stretching the lead to 10-0.
Fromson (6-2) suffered just his second defeat of the season after allowing five runs on five hits in addition to handing out five walks and hitting another hitter in just 2 1/3 innings. Jake Lochner and Ryan Dunne combined to hold BU scoreless over the final three innings.
Castro totaled two hits in three at-bats to account for half of MSU's hit total.
Up next, the Bears (35-20) will play an 11:34 a.m. (CDT) elimination contest against Indiana State in an effort to extend their season. The winner of the game will take on Bradley at 6:34 p.m.
