2016 Thirty Under 30 Recipients
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Missouri State assistant volleyball coach Jake Barreau was honored Friday, April 8, as a recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Thirty Under 30 Award, given annually to 30 up-and-coming volleyball coaches under 30 years old in the sport at all levels of the game.
Barreau joined the MSU staff in June 2014, and has coached a total of five Bears to seven all-Missouri Valley Conference honors since coming to Springfield, with Lily Johnson twice being an AVCA All-America honorable mention choice and Kinsey Batten joining her on the team in 2015. Those two players also earned MVC Player and Setter of the Year laurels, respectively, last season.
A native of Portage, Wis., Barreau works extensively with MSU's defensive players, helping the 2015 Bears rank fifth nationally in total digs while libero Emily Butters set the school's freshman record with 568 digs. Additionally, Missouri State has been the top team in the MVC in service reception the last two seasons, allowing an average of 0.85 aces per set over that time.
Missouri State won at least 20 matches in each of his first two seasons on staff, including a 24-11 mark and NCAA Tournament at-large berth in 2015.
Prior to coming to MSU, Barreau spent the 2013 season as a volunteer assistant for his alma mater Wisconsin's NCAA runner-up team, where he coached a pair of All-Americans in setter Lauren Carlini and outside hitter Ellen Chapman.
Barreau, 25, has also spent time as a varsity high school volleyball coach in Wisconsin, as well as a club coach for both high school and college teams. He played for the Wisconsin men's club team that reached as high as fourth in the national rankings, earning second-team all-conference honors in 2012 and being named the 2010 and 2011 Big Ten Men's Volleyball Association Defensive Player of the Year.
