SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State head football coach Dave "Stec" Steckel was pleased with the efforts of both his offense and defense Friday afternoon as the Bears ran through 90 plays at Plaster Stadium in the club's second spring intrasquad scrimmage.
The defense came up with three big stops during the two-minute drill late in the session, getting an end zone interception by Kam Carter, a missed field goal and a turnover on downs to keep the offense in check late. The scrimmage ended with the squad's three kickers each taking a shot at a 41-yard field goal surrounded by the entire team. Zach Drake and Brendan Withrow converted their attempts, while Shelby Harris' kick was blocked by the defense, giving the offense the upper hand for the day.
"It was fun, but what it really was was competition," Stec explained. "We like that intensity and we need to see more of it. I thought the offense made some great plays today, and I thought our defense did a great job on some key down plays, particularly in the red zone."
The offense was shut out in the first quarter, but got on the board in the second period with an 18-yard touchdown strike from Breck Ruddick to tight end Erik Furmanek to cap a seven-play, 66-yard drive. In the third quarter, Ruddick called his own number and ran it in from 7 yards out to put the exclamation on a 52-yard scoring drive.
The fourth quarter was more wide open with the ball placed in the red zone six straight sequences. Nick Masoner and Calan Crowder each posted rushing touchdowns, while Drake booted two field goals -- from 37 and 33 yards -- and Withrow added a 33-yarder. Brodie Lambert also connected with an 18-yard strike to Deion Holliman who made an acrobatic catch in the end zone on the game's final touchdown.
Ten different receivers accounted for 22 receptions on the offensive side of the ball, while Crowder had impressive runs of 37 and 27 yards to finish with a big day on the ground.
With just two weeks left of spring camp, the Bears will practice three times next week with an abbreviated "half scrimmage" slated for Friday afternoon. The annual MSU Maroon and White Game concludes spring drills on Saturday, April 23 with a 12 Noon kickoff.
Admission for the Maroon and White Game is free with pregame tailgating permitted in the traditional BearFest Village area north of the stadium, beginning at 10 a.m. Reservations for the tailgating area are not required, and load-in time begins at 9 a.m. via the traditional BearFest Village route, north on Hammons Parkway from Grand. Tents, tables and chair services will not be available for the spring game, and stakes will not be permitted for tents during the spring game. BearFest Village alcohol rules will be enforced in the same manner as the regular-season tailgating activities.
