KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Missouri State's women's golf team wrapped up the Kansas City Shootout here Tuesday with a third-place team showing, posting a final-round 316 to break away from Northern Illinois and host UMKC on the final day of the 13-team meet.
Little Rock (918) finished 54-over to claim the top team honor, two strokes ahead of Wichita State (920) and 13 strokes ahead of MSU. South Dakota State (935) was fourth, followed closely by Northern Illinois (936) and UMKC (937).
The Bears also had two individuals in the top 10 with senior Megan Furnish and sophomore Stine Pettersen posting identical 227 scores to tie for 9th place. Furnish was among the tournament's top performers on the par-3 and par-4 holes and moved up six spots on the final day with rounds of 77-76-74 - 227 on the par-72 layout at Shoal Creek Golf Club. Pettersen tallied 37 par scores for the tournament which was tops among all players. She shot rounds of 73-78-76 - 227 to improve one spot on Tuesday.
MSU junior Caroline Boone (236) tied for 27th place, while sophomore teammate Verena Gimmy (241) tied for 42nd, and freshman Ashley Childers (260) tied for 81st. Junior Kierseten Prater (83rd) also competed in the event as an individual.
UMKC's Cynthia Diaz was the tournament's individual medalist, firing a field-best 70 on the final 18 holes to finish with a four-over 220 and edge Little Rock's Stina Resen by a single stroke.
Coach Kevin Kane's troops will now prepare for the MVC Championship at Harborside International Golf Center in Chicago, April 17-19. The Bears entered the week ranked second among The Valley's 10 teams in scoring average (302.7) trailing only two-time defending champion Wichita State (301.6).
