SPRINGFIELD - The Missouri State women's tennis team dropped its final regular season match to Southern Illinois, 6-1, at Cooper Tennis Complex Sunday, April 24. The Bears' lone win on Senior Day came in a three-set victory at No. 1 singles by Ema Turudija.

The Salukis (14-11, 6-1 MVC) snagged the initial doubles point with 6-1 and 6-3 victories on courts No. 3 and No. 2, respectively. MSU's senior duo of Turudija and Miranda Poile forced a tiebreaker at the No. 1 position, but eventually fell 7-6 (7) to SIU's Xiwei Cai and Ana Sofia Cordero.

Turudija earned MSU's point by having to rally against the Salukis' Cai. After winning her opening set 6-3, Cai took the second, 6-2, and the MSU senior trailed 5-4 in the third. Turudija rattled off three consecutive games in the third set to win 7-5.

Poile had an opportunity to force a third set at No. 2 singles. The Bears' senior dropped her first set, 6-3, and came back after being down 5-2 to make it a 5-5 tie in the second set versus Athena Chrysanthou. The two battled to a tiebreaker and Poile had a set point at 6-5, but Chrysanthou held her off and eventually took the match 6-3, 7-6 (7).

SIU won the remaining matchups in straight sets. Meagan Monaghan, Sofia Cordero, Katie Fries, Polina Dozortseva produced victories at Nos. 3-6 singles, respectively, for the Salukis.

The MVC Women's Tennis Team Championship bracket was determined following Sunday's duals. The Bears (11-13, 3-4 MVC) will be the sixth seed heading into the conference tournament and play Drake at 2 p.m. Friday, April 29, in Wichita, Kansas, at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.

"We had a big improvement this season, even looking at it from January until now," Bears head coach Mallory Weber said. "The team has gone through a lot and competed at a very high level. Even though we lost today, SIU is a very good team and they're going to do well. I think we're on a good swing here going into the conference tournament next weekend."

The quarterfinals of the MVC Championship on the women's side will take place at the Coleman Complex on the Wichita State campus. The semifinals will move to Crestview Country Club in Wichita with the men's tournament moving to the Coleman Complex. Both the men's and women's championship duals will be located at the Coleman Complex on Sunday, May 1.
