NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State won eight of nine matches in a 6-1 victory over Missouri State in a Missouri Valley Conference women's tennis dual Saturday, April 16, at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts.
The Redbirds improved to 12-9 overall and 3-2 in conference play with the victory. The Bears fell to 10-11 overall and 2-2 in the MVC. The loss for MSU was the Bears' first since Feb. 26 and ended the team's consecutive victory streak at eight.
Missouri State's lone victory came at No. 6 singles. Freshman Phoebe Boeschen won her sixth straight match by topping the Redbirds' Chanel Scudiero in straight sets 6-0, 6-3.
Illinois State won five of six singles matches and all three in doubles play.
MSU's Ema Turudija and Anelisse Torrico Moreno both had competitive matches in singles on courts No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Turudija took her first set against Illinois State's Veronika Golanova 7-5, but fell 6-1 in the second to force a third-set match tiebreaker, which the Redbird won 10-6. Torrico Moreno forced a tiebreaker in her first set, but eventually was defeated by Jana Kustkova 7-6 (5), 7-5.
Marcia Tere-Apisah, Kadi Ilves and Catherine Shulman all won in straight sets for the Redbirds.
The Redbirds earned the initial doubles point with a 6-0 victory at the No. 1 slot and 6-3 win at the No. 3 position. MSU's Boeschen and Torrico Moreno went to a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles versus Ilves and Sarah Paulson, but the Illinois State tandem pulled out a 7-6 (4) victory to complete a sweep in doubles.
Missouri State closes out its MVC road schedule at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 17, against Bradley in Peoria, Illinois. The Braves are 10-11 (1-3 MVC) ahead of hosting the Bears tomorrow in their home finale.
