GALESBURG, Ill. - The Missouri State women's tennis team dictated play and won eight matches in a 7-0 dual victory over Western Illinois at the Lakeside Recreation Center on Saturday, March 12.
The Bears won their fourth consecutive dual to improve to 6-10 overall behind wins in two doubles and six singles matches. The Leathernecks dropped to 3-7 with the defeat.
MSU's Nos. 1-3 singles players Ema Turudija, Anelisse Torrico Moreno and Miranda Poile completed undefeated weekends to lead the Bears.
MSU seniors Turudija and Poile began the day at No. 1 doubles by defeating WIU's Courtney Lubbers and Maria Bessmertnaya 6-1. Turudija was the first singles winner for the Bears, topping Lubbers at the No. 1 slot 6-2, 6-1. Poile went to tiebreaker in her first set at No. 3 singles and won 7-6 (4), then finished off her match with a 6-4 second set over Arianna Demos.
Turudija and Poile have each won a combined eight straight singles and doubles matchups.
Torrico Moreno also won both of her matchups against WIU. The sophomore teamed up with freshman Phoebe Boeschen to earn a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles, then beat Bessmertnaya at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-2. Boeschen competed at the No. 6 singles position and defeated Maya Sykes 8-0.
Junior Ekaterina Donetskova was the second Bear to close out a singles match by winning at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-2 against WIU's Nicole Jones. MSU freshman Faty Khamissi closed out the dual for the Bears by picking up an 8-7 (4) victory over the Leathernecks' Jenna Wallace. Khamissi and sophomore Abbey Belote also appeared and were leading at No. 3 doubles before their match was left unfinished.
Missouri State closes out a span of three straight road matches by heading to Jonesboro, Arkansas, to take on the Arkansas State Red Wolves at 12 p.m. Friday, March 18. The Bears return to Springfield to host South Dakota State at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, at Cooper Tennis Complex.
