ARLINGTON, Texas - The Missouri State women's tennis team fell in its opening dual of its three-match road trip, 6-1, to UT Arlington at the UTA Tennis Center Friday, Feb. 19.
Faty Khamissi earned her team-leading fourth singles victory of the spring, but the Bears (1-8) were unable to keep up with UT Arlington (3-0) as the Mavericks improved their home-court winning streak to 15. Missouri State is scheduled to play Sam Houston State (4-2) at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Bears and Mavericks had three singles matches go three sets with Khamissi earning the lone win for MSU.
After dropping her first set 6-4 to Carla Carden Vives at No. 5 singles, Khamissi came back to take the second 6-4 and the match tiebreaker 10-6. The win evened Khamissi's singles record this spring to 4-4.
MSU's Anelisse Torrico Moreno also went to a third-set match tiebreaker against UT Arlington's Jessica Birowski at No. 2 singles. She forced the set match tiebreaker by winning the second set 6-4, but couldn't overcome Birowski as the Maverick finished it off by 10-4 score.
Phoebe Boeschen also went to three sets for the Bears at the No. 6 slot. Boeschen won the first set over Valeria Lopez, but Lopez won in consecutive sets 6-0, 6-3 to close out the dual.
Earning straight set victories for the Mavericks were Elizabeth Thoms at No. 1 singles, Agustina Serio at the No. 3 slot and Luxizi Meng in the No. 4 position.
The Mavericks earned the initial doubles behind wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. The Bears' No. 1 duo of Ema Turudija and Miranda Poile held a 4-3 lead over Thoms and Carden Vives before their match was left unfinished.
