Johnson, Messa Collect MVC Volleyball Honors

St. LOUIS -- Missouri State picked up two more Missouri Valley Conference volleyball awards on Monday, as junior Lily Johnson was selected as the Player of the Week for the eighth time in her career, and Daniele Messa earned Freshman of the Week recognition for the fourth consecutive week and fifth time overall in 2016. Five different Bears have now been honored a total of 11 times by the MVC this season.

Johnson's eighth career award moves her into a tie for second in league history behind only UNI's Molly O'Brien's record 10 selections. The outside hitter averaged 5.86 kills, 6.57 points, 3.29 digs and 0.57 blocks per set while hitting .291 in wins against Drake and UNI.

Johnson had at least 20 kills in each match, breaking her own school record with her 37th consecutive match in double figures on Saturday against UNI, and also becoming the 23rd player in school history with 1,000 career digs and the sixth member of the 1,000-dig, 1,000-kill club against the Panthers. The Wildwood, Mo., native finished the UNI match with 21 kills, 15 digs and two solo blocks.

Friday, the two-time All-American had 20 kills against just two errors with a .333 attack efficiency against Drake, adding eight digs, two blocks and two services aces in MSU's sweep of the Bulldogs.

Messa averaged 13.43 assists and 4.00 digs while setting MSU's offense to a .279 hitting percentage in two wins. Friday, Messa notched a double-double with 42 assists and 12 digs in a sweep of Drake, adding two kills, one block and one ace. Saturday, the freshman setter from Bartlett, Ill., dished out 52 assists to go with 16 digs and a kill, helping the Bears to a .265 attack efficiency against one of the nation's top floor defenses.

The Bears sit in sole possession of first place in the MVC with a 19-7 overall record and 10-2 league mark after winning 10 consecutive matches. MSU returns to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. match at Bradley.
