FARMVILLE, Va. – Three goals in the second half lifted the Longwood Lancers (9-8, 3-3 MAC) over the Missouri State field hockey team (3-12, 1-5 MAC) by a score of 3-0 in the Bears' last Mid-American Conference game Saturday afternoon.
Longwood was the first to register a shot when Olivia Wawrzyniak fired her first attempt in the fifth minute. The Lancers would take five more shots before sophomore
Emily Tran recorded the first shot of the day for the Bears in the 18
th minute.
Senior goalkeeper
Megan Drew tallied six saves in the first half alone. The San Diego native earned her first save in the seventh minute and recorded back-to-back saves in the 14
th minute off Longwood penalty corners. Another save in the first half came from senior
Brynne Satre, who recorded her third defensive save of the season.
The Bears earned their first corner in the 28
th minute, but came up short in the scoring opportunity when junior
Andrea Soler Codina's shot was saved by the Longwood goalkeeper. MSU earned another corner three minutes later, but was unable to find the back of the cage, heading into halftime scoreless.
Missouri State kept Longwood off the board until the 39
th minute when Edel Nyland slipped one past MSU goalkeeper
Feli Heinzel on a penalty corner to give the Lancers a 1-0 advantage. Three minutes later, the Lancers struck again off a shot from the left side to make it a 2-0 match.
In the 47
th minute, Nyland netted her second goal of the match off a penalty corner to extend Longwood's lead, 3-0.
Following the goal, the Bears lined up for a penalty corner in the 52
nd minute. Soler Codina fired two shots and sophomore
Renee Rhoads registered one shot, but the pair were unable to get the Bears on the board.
Sophomore
Feli Heinzel finished the day with seven saves and combined with Drew and Satre for 14 saves on the day. Soler Codina led the team with three of the Bears' seven shots.
With the loss, Missouri State will not advance to the MAC Tournament, set to take place in Kent, Ohio, and will conclude its season tomorrow against Virginia Commonwealth.
