Field Hockey Ends 2016 Season With 3-0 Setback

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth's Emily McNamara found the net three times, propelling the Rams past Missouri State 3-0 in the Bears' 2016 season finale at Cary Street Field, Sunday afternoon.

"Taking a step back and looking at the season as a whole I am happy that, for the most part, we improved as our season progressed," head coach Catherine Ostoich said. "While this wasn't the season we all wanted, I think we learned many valuable lessons and a new standard has been set."

Junior Andrea Soler Codina got things started for the Bears when she fired the first shot of the match in the third minute. Soler Codina tallied three more shots in the first half and senior Liz Young also recorded a shot off a MSU penalty corner in the 17th minute.

Senior Megan Drew recorded two of her six saves in the first half, keeping Missouri State and VCU tied at zero heading into halftime.

The Rams got on the board eight minutes into the second half when Emily McNamara stole the ball from the top of the circle and was able to sneak the ball past Drew to give VCU a 1-0 lead. One minute later, in the 43rd minute, McNamara recorded her second goal off a rebounded shot.

VCU's final goal came in the 47th minute when McNamara completed her hat trick off a cross shot from 15-yards out to seal the deal for the Rams.

The Bears' loss marks the final game for seniors Brynne Satre, Ruth Reid, Liz Young and Megan Drew, who have all put in valuable time during their careers at Missouri State.

"These senior set a bar for the team to rise up and meet," Ostoich added. "We are going to spend this next year improving so we can meet and eventually surpass that expectation."

The Missouri State field hockey team finished its 2016 campaign with a 3-13 overall record and 1-5 mark in Mid-American Conference play.
