CHICAGO, Ill. – The Missouri State men's soccer team (7-5-2, 3-2-1 MVC) suffered its second conference loss of the season to the No. 15 Loyola Ramblers (12-1-1, 5-0-1 MVC) on Saturday (Oct. 22). It is just the second time in program history that the Bears have fallen to the Ramblers, and the first time at Loyola Soccer Park.
The Ramblers controlled possession early, taking their first shot less than two minutes into the match. In the sixth minute, Loyola was called for a foul 40 yards out from the goal to set up a free kick for the Bears. MSU's
Phil Woods sent the free attempt into the box, as
Robbie Oslica whipped his head around and sent the ball just wide of the goal.
In the 12
th minute of the match, Loyola's Kevin Engesser beat his MSU defender on the near side and fired a shot from 15 yards out, sending the ball just past the Bears' goalkeeper,
Liam Priestley, to give the Ramblers the early 1-0 lead.
Both teams registered four first-half shots, while each keeper collected a save, heading into the locker room.
Loyola added to its lead in the 54
th minute, when Aidan Megally jumped over MSU defenders to head in his second goal of the season, just inside the far post.
The Bears were unable to get a shot off in the second half, while the Ramblers took six of their own. Loyola is the first team to hold Missouri State without a shot in a half this season, and the first team since Creighton, to limit the Bears to five shots or less in a match.
With tonight's win, Loyola remains undefeated in league play and jumps to a six-point, first-place lead in the MVC standings. Missouri State, SIU Edwardsville and Evansville are in a battle for the second-place spot, with 10 points apiece. Five of the seven Valley teams have two league matches remaining in the regular season, while two teams – Central Arkansas and SIUE – have three left to play.
The Bears travel to Tulsa, Okla. for their final non-conference match of the regular season on Tuesday (Oct. 25), where MSU and the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles will battle it out in the final leg of the home-and-home series between the two clubs.
