MVC Tournament Central

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Missouri State picked up two wins on the final day of the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Tennis Championship Monday, claiming the third-place matches in No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles at Wesselman Tennis Center.

Junior Anelisse Torrico Moreno beat Wichita State's Ting-Ya Hsu in straight sets (6-0, 6-4) to cap a 2-1 weekend with a third-place finish in the No. 2 singles spot. In the top doubles flight, Alye Darter and Phoebe Boeschen down Evansville by an 8-6 score to finish third as well.

The Bears nearly went 4-0 on the day, with tie-breaks involved in both losses. Freshman Alexia Meyer lost a tight 7-5, 7-6 (5) decision in the No. 6 singles title match, and Boeschen split the first two sets with Illinois State's Jana Kustkova before losing a 10-8 tie-break in the final set of the No. 4 singles third-place contest.

"I am very proud of how we competed this weekend across the board," said head coach Mallory Weber after the completion of the tournament. "To finish third in No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles are great results, and Alexia's effort in her championship match was impressive. We have a lot to keep working on going into these last few weeks of our fall season."
