Tennis Completes Weekend Sweep With Another 5-2 Win

SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State's tennis team topped visiting Tennessee State for the second consecutive day, beating the Tigers by a 5-2 final to improve to 2-0 in dual matches during the fall season.

"This was a very solid weekend for us," said MSU head coach Mallory Weber after her team's eighth win in its last nine outings at Cooper Tennis Complex. "We were pushed up and down the lineup and came out of this with some great dual match experience."

MSU freshman Alexia Meyer completed a perfect 4-0 weekend with two more wins, beginning with a critical tie-break victory to hand the Bears the doubles point. After Missouri State grabbed a solid 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles and lost by a service break in the No. 2 spot, it came down to Meyer and Abbey Belote at No. 3 doubles, and the pair came through with a 7-4 tie-break win to put MSU ahead 1-0.

The Bears were once again strong in the bottom half of their singles lineup, winning each match from the third through sixth positions. Senior Ekaterina Donetskova improved her singles record to 4-1 in the fall with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the fifth spot, and freshman Alye Darter earned her third win of the year with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.

Phoebe Boeschen won in straight sets at No. 4 singles for the second consecutive day, and Meyer's match was the last to finish as the rookie earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory over TSU's Phyllicia Hemphill at No. 6 singles.

Up next for the Bears is a trip to the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championship, Oct. 8-10 in Evansville, Ind.
