FENTON, Mo. - Senior Holly Scherer scored her second goal of the game in overtime to lift Missouri State to a 5-4 victory over Saint Louis in college field hockey on Thursday, Sept. 17.
The Bears took advantage early in overtime, outshooting the Billikens 6-0. In the 76th minute, Scherer's 10th shot of the contest found its way into the back of the net to give Missouri State the win.
MSU recorded a season-high 33 shots, with 22 of those shots on goal. The Bears improved to 2-4 this season with the victory, while the Billikens dropped to 0-8.
The matchup was a tale of ties throughout as both teams were knotted at 1-1 at halftime. Sophomore Andrea Soler Codina scored the Bears' lone goal of the half with a penalty stroke in the 18th minute.
Saint Louis took a 2-1 lead thanks to a penalty corner in the 43rd minute before MSU went on a three-goal run.
Junior Liz Young took a shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner and notched her first goal of the season in the 51st minute to tie the contest. The Bears went up two in the 57th minute behind a Scherer shot that put MSU up one, then within a minute senior Cami Mullins notched the first goal of her Bears career to give Missouri State a 4-2 lead.
The Billikens scored two goals in the final seven minutes of play to force overtime before the Bears tallied the game-winner in overtime.
Missouri State outshot Saint Louis 33-12 in all three periods and also held 16-4 edge in penalty corners.
Scherer led the Bears with 10 shots, followed by Charlie Redhead's eight and Soler Codina and Young's five shots apiece. Patrice Ahl and Jessi Pope both registered assists on Young's goal in the 51st minute. Billikens goalkeeper Tori Westhead made 16 saves and MSU's Megan Drew registered six saves.
The Bears continue their road trip traveling to Iowa City, Iowa. Missouri State will face Rutgers in a 1 p.m. matchup Saturday, Sept. 19, at Iowa's Grant Field before taking on the Hawkeyes at 1 p.m. Sunday.
