LOUISVILLE -- Four different players scored goals -- including two with their first-career goals -- but they weren't enough as Missouri State was defeated by the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 6-4, in college field hockey Sunday, Aug. 30, at Trager Stadium.
Missouri State (0-2) opened the game with momentum, earning the first six penalty corners of the contest. The Bears finally broke through in the 15th minute on a seventh corner opportunity when Patrice Ahl set up Charlie Redhead for her first goal of the season. Jessi Pope took the corner and was credited with an assist.
Appalachian State (1-1) followed that with two tallies of its own in the next 10 minutes before the Bears tied the score at 2-2.
Sydney Richelieu sent a cross into the circle finding Holly Scherer who found the back of the net for the equalizer with less than two minutes remaining in the first half.
The Mountaineers scored the eventual game-winning goal at the end of the half. Appalachian State was given a short corner with no time remaining and capitalized as Caroline Phillips scored her second goal to put the Mountaineers ahead 3-2.
Shots that found the back of the net by Micaela Diedericks and Charlotte Kirwan of Appalachian State put the game out of reach, with MSU able to only cut the deficit to two in the second half.
Bears freshman Alexa Simpson and Pope scored their first-career goals in the final half, with Pope's coming off a corner opportunity with no time left in the game.
Mountaineers goalkeeper Cristina Ceppi made 11 saves, while Phillips led the way with six combined points on two goals and two assists.
Ahl finished with a team-high two assists while Pope finished with an MSU-high three points in the game.
The Bears are scheduled next to head to North Carolina for three contests in a four-day span, beginning with a 4:30 p.m. CST matchup at Davidson on Thursday, Sept. 3.
