Bears Top Western Michigan, Milwaukee to Start 3-0

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Missouri State volleyball team earned a 3-2 win over Western Michigan and a sweep of host Milwaukee Saturday at the Klotsche Center to finish the Pepsi Panther Invitational with their first 3-0 start since the 2010 season.

Senior Kinsey Batten was named tournament MVP, while sophomores Lily Johnson and Lynsey Wright joined her on the all-tournament team.

Missouri State hosts the annual Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational at Hammons Student Center Sept. 4-5. The Bears open with Miami (Fla.) on Friday, and play Oral Roberts and Marquette on Saturday.

Western Michigan Recap (Won 25-17, 20-25, 24-26, 25-18, 15-13)
Johnson and Wright set career highs for kills with 27 and 17, respectively, and Batten set a new personal standard with 65 assists as the Bears hit .265 as a team in the five-set win. Freshman Ashley Ophoven added 14 kills in her first start, Simone House had six blocks, and Emily Butters had 19 digs to lead four players in double figures.

Missouri State jumped ahead early in the first set and cruised to victory, and Western Michigan followed suit in the second before breaking the pattern in the third set by overcoming an 8-2 deficit to lead 2-1.

Wright had eight kills in the fourth set, including three along with two blocks during a 6-0 run for a 16-10 MSU advantage. MSU led by as many as eight points at 21-13 before a 5-0 run by the Broncos, but closed on a 4-0 spurt that featured Wright's final two kills of the frame.

The Bears scored first in the fifth set and never trailed. House's kill put MSU ahead 7-4 and the teams traded points to 11-8 before Johnson's kill held serve for MSU for a 12-8 advantage. The sophomore added three more kills from there, including the clincher after WMU closed to 14-13.

Milwaukee Recap (Won 25-23, 25-18, 25-22)
The Bears held the Panthers to a .101 hitting percentage, recording 52 digs and nine blocks in the sweep.

Missouri State overcame a 7-2 deficit in the first set as Johnson landed seven kills in the victory. Then in the second, Milwaukee went on a 9-0 run to lead 12-8 after the Bears opened on a 6-1 spurt. Missouri State scored the final five points to pull away from a 20-18 lead, with four of those coming on two kills and two blocks by House.

The Bears got off to another fast start in the third, jumping out to an 8-2 advantage. Milwaukee battled back to force a 17-17 tie, but never regained the lead as Wright countered with a kill and an ace for a 19-17 score that held up for the win.

Johnson led Missouri State with 15 kills and Wright added 11 to go with four blocks. House recorded five stuffs and Elise Munroe scooped 17 digs to lead all players.
