Hoosiers Down Bears in Field Hockey Season Opener, 5-1

LOUISVILLE - The Missouri State Bears field hockey team dropped its season opener to the Indiana Hoosiers, 5-1, at Trager Stadium Friday, Aug. 28.

The Bears (0-1) responded with the only goal of the second half after the Hoosiers (1-0) scored five goals in the first 29 minutes of play.

Senior Jackie Eskue notched the second goal of her career in the 58th minute for MSU after a deflection on a Holly Scherer shot.

Freshman Feli Heinzel made her debut in net for the Bears in the first half, making eight saves on 13 shots faced. Junior Megan Drew came in during the second half and made saves on all two shots on goal.

The Hoosiers had four different goals scorers, with Karen Lorite leading the way with two goals and an assist.

Indiana outshot MSU 14-3 in the opening half before the Bears took advantage in the final half to make it a 17-10 edge for Indiana in the game. MSU also earned a 6-5 advantage in corner opportunities in the match.

Seniors Scherer, Charlie Redhead, Sydney Richelieu, Liz Young and Kimberleigh Eng all recorded shots on goal for the Bears.

Missouri State returns to action at 10 a.m. CST Sunday, Aug. 30, to take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers at Trager Stadium.
