SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State handed out its annual year-end awards recognizing the school's top female student-athletes Thursday, with volleyball player Lily Johnson (Fr., Wildwood, Mo.) and basketball player Kenzie Williams (Jr., Mt. Vernon, Mo.) sharing the 2014-15 Outstanding Female Athlete Award, as voted on by Missouri State's nine women's head coaches, and senior volleyball player Andrea Beaty (Pacific, Mo.) earning the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Senior Female Scholar-Athlete Award, given to the graduating female student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average.
Other finalists for the 2014-15 Outstanding Female Athlete Award, which saw the votes tie for just the second time, were: all-MVC sprinter and hurdler Oarabile Babolayi (Mosetse, Botswana); First-team all-MVC soccer player Molly Huber (Sr., Louis, Mo.); NFCA all-region softball player Chelsea Jones (Sr., El Reno, Okla.); and all-MAC field hockey player Andrea Solder Codina (Fr., Terrassa, Spain).
A first-team all-Missouri Valley Conference selection and the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women's basketball, Williams led the Lady Bears in scoring at 15.4 points per game, including a 16.1 average on 46 percent field goal shooting in conference games. She also averaged 5.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.9 steals while starting all 33 contests.
Williams ranked among the league's top 15 in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, assists, steals, free throw percentage, 3-pointers per game and 3-point percentage, scored in double figures 28 times, and joined the school's 1,000-point club in February. Williams ended the season ranked 18th in MSU history with 1,170 career points, and her 509 points on the year were the No. 16 season total in school history.
Johnson's exceptional freshman season in 2014 culminated with a selection to the AVCA All-American Honorable Mention squad, making her the sixth player and first freshman to reach All-America status in Missouri State's storied volleyball history.
The MVC Freshman of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection, Johnson led the MVC in total kills (495), kills per set (3.99), points per set (4.50) and aces per set (0.31), ranking among the top 70 players nationally in each of those categories. Her kill total and average established MSU freshman records, while her performances of 26 kills on Sept. 12 against Ball State and 23 kills at Kansas State on Sept. 8 represented the Nos. 1 and 3 single-match kill totals for a freshman in school history.
Johnson, who joins swimming's Courtney Phillips in 2003 as the only freshmen to win MSU's Outstanding Female Athlete Award, had at least 10 kills in 27 of Missouri State's 32 matches, including a streak of 13 in a row to close the season that serves as the longest at MSU since 1997. She also posted seven matches with at least 20 kills, the most in a season at MSU since 1998, while the last Bear to finish their career with at least seven 20-kill matches finished playing in 2006.
Additionally, Johnson had at least 17 kills in seven consecutive matches from Sept. 8-26, the longest such streak since 1997, while her 495 kills and 3.99 average ranked sixth and seventh, respectively, on MSU's single-season list.
Beaty graduated with a 3.92 grade-point average in May with a degree in Psychology after spending three seasons with the Bears' volleyball program from 2012-14. She accumulated 515 kills in three seasons at Missouri State and more than 1,200 as a collegian, earning second-team all-MVC honors for the Bears in both 2012 and 2014, as well as MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team accolades following both of those seasons.
Beaty hit .264 and averaged 2.19 kills and 0.95 blocks per set during her MSU career, and ranked sixth in the MVC as a senior with a .313 attack efficiency. She earned a Capital One Academic All-District Second Team nod in 2014 as well.
The Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Senior Female Scholar-Athlete Award is named in honor of the long-time Missouri State teacher, coach and athletics administrator who became the first female to be named as Missouri Sports Legend by the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
