SPRINGFIELD -- After a canceled match Wednesday put an end to a six-dual road swing, the Missouri State women's tennis team returns to Cooper Tennis Complex this weekend for Missouri Valley Conference matchups against Bradley and Illinois State.
The Bears will host their final home matches of the season, beginning with an 11 a.m. Saturday, April 11, contest with the Bradley Braves on `Campus Kids Day.' Free admission, pizza and wristbands will be offered for fans of all ages, as kids are also encouraged to bring their racket and participate in different on-court contests beginning at 10:30 a.m. with some of the Bears' student-athletes.
MSU finishes its 2014-15 home campaign Sunday, April 12, by taking on the Illinois State Redbirds in dual action at 10 a.m.
Last Match
Missouri State junior Miranda Poile and freshman Anelisse Torrico Moreno each won their respective singles matches, but the Evansville Purple Aces prevailed in an MVC dual over the Bears on Saturday, April 4, in Evansville, Ind.
Torrico Moreno earned her team-leading ninth win of the season and Poile picked up her sixth overall in singles to lead the Bears at Wesselman Park, but the Purple Aces clinched the doubles point and rattled off three straight wins in singles to put the match out of reach.
About Bradley
The Bradley Braves are 9-9 overall and 0-2 in the MVC after recent 4-3 and 7-0 losses to Northern Iowa and Drake, respectively. The Braves have had two separate three-dual winning streaks this season and have currently lost three straight matches. Bradley is led by No. 2 singles player Ariel Dechter, who is 14-4 this spring and 26-9 throughout the 2014-15 season.
The Bears and Braves will be meeting for the 22nd time all-time with MSU holding a 16-5 edge in the series.
About Illinois State
The Illinois State Redbirds are 2-13 overall and 0-2 in the MVC. The Redbirds are currently on a 10-match losing streak, including a 7-0 loss to Drake and 5-2 defeat to Northern Iowa last weekend to begin conference play. Illinois State's Kadi Ilves and Chanel Scudiero share the team lead with 10 wins in singles competition apiece. Ilves and Donna Haycock have the most wins among double tandems for ISU with eight this season at the No. 1 slot.
Sunday's match will be the 25th between MSU and ISU all-time, with the Redbirds staking claim to a 19-5 record over the Bears. Â
Getting Back on Track
Anelisse Torrico Moreno was able to pick up a win in her last match at Evansville over the Purple Aces' Marina Moreno in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. It was the first win for the Bolivia native since Missouri State's last contest at Cooper Tennis Complex on March 9 against IPFW. Torrico Moreno will look to continue her run of streaks this season against the Braves and Redbirds this weekend. The freshman began her collegiate career this spring with two-straight losses, then went on an eight-match winning streak before breaking a four-match skid at Evansville on Saturday, April 4. Torrico Moreno is currently 9-7 overall in singles play.
