KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Missouri State freshman Verena Gimmy fired a 1-over-par 145, and is just two stroke back through 36 holes at the Kansas City Shootout, presented by Gary Crossley Ford, at Shoal Creek Golf Club Monday.

The Bears are tied for third as a team, carding a 28-over-par 604, a day which included tying the third-best round in school history with an opening-round 5-over-par 293.

"Obviously we're happy with the strong start, which is something we haven't always done," Missouri State head coach Kevin Kane said. "It would have been nice to follow that with something a little better, but we're still in a good spot."

Gimmy shot a career-low 1-under-par 71 on her first 18 with three birdies and two bogeys to spearhead the Bears' first round on the par-72, 6124-yard course. It marked the first time since April 6, 2008 at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic that Missouri State posted 293.

A Neuss, Germany, native, Gimmy is in a three-way tie for second with Middle Tennessee's Emily Miller and Natalie Roth of North Dakota State. Gimmy has played the course's par 3s to 1-under thus far and is tied for third in the field with 26 pars.

"I'm really proud of Verena - that was quite a day," said Kane. "She's been really solid all year and I expect her to finish strong tomorrow. We need to finish strong as a team, too."

Junior Megan Furnish recorded MSU's second-best opening-round tally, a 1-over 73, following that with an 80 for 9-over 153 to sit in a tie for 22nd.

Senior Chiara Citterio shot consecutive rounds of 75, and is tied for 13th at 6-over 150. Citterio is tied for fourth in with seven birdies through 36 holes.

Freshman Stine Pettersen turned in a 2-over-par 74 in her first round, but settled for an 82 to close the day with a 12-over 156, tying for 34th overall.

Senior Megan Thompson is tied for 53rd at 16-over 160, posting 78 and 82.

Sophomore Caroline Boone, playing as an individual, is tied for 48th overall and sixth among individual competitors. She shot 159, beginning the day with a 7-over-par 79.

As a team the Bears are tied with Western Michigan. Oral Roberts (24-over 600) is second with MTSU in the lead at 8-over 584. The Blue Raiders' Avery George holds the individual lead at 1-under 145.

The final round is set for an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start on Tuesday.
