CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois lengthened its school-record win streak to 12 straight matches with a 7-0 victory over the Missouri State women's tennis team on Friday, April 3, at the Garden Grove Events Center.
The Salukis (13-6) completed sweeps in both singles and doubles play, leading to SIU's 19th consecutive home win spanning the last two seasons.
"We lost to a better team today," MSU head coach Mallory Weber said. "I'm proud of how we are growing as a team, but we aren't there yet and we have to get tougher in the big moments."
The Bears (3-12) competed in two close matches in doubles action -- with the No. 2 squad of Ekaterina Donetskova/Anelisse Torrico Moreno and No. 3 tandem of Mackenzie Rozell/Rebecca McIsaac -- falling by 8-5 scores to begin the dual.
SIU's Natasha Tomishima and Meagan Monaghan defeated MSU's Ema Turudija and Miranda Poile by an 8-2 margin to give the Salukis an opening 1-0 lead.
Five players eventually won in straight sets in singles to clinch a victory for SIU.
Turudija -- a junior -- dropped serve just once in her opening set for the Bears at No. 1 singles, but was unable to push her match to a third set, falling in the second 6-1.
MSU sophomore Rozell and SIU's Yana Golovkina at No. 3 singles was the lone match to make it to three sets. Despite two slim clinches in the first two sets, Golovkina came away with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win.
Missouri State concludes its road trip with a 1 p.m. dual Saturday, April 4, in Evansville, Ind., against the Evansville Purple Aces at Wesselman Park.
