DES MOINES, Iowa -- Ema Turudija forced tiebreakers in singles in two sets to lead the Missouri State women's tennis team in a Missouri Valley Conference loss to Drake, 7-0, Saturday, April 18, at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs improved to 20-4 overall this season and head into their final regular season matchup Sunday with a 6-0 record in MVC play. The Bears dropped to 4-15 overall and 1-5 in conference duals.
Turudija, a junior playing at No. 1 singles for MSU, forced Drake's Mariel Ante into two tiebreakers. Both players didn't drop serve in either set, but Ante took advantage early in the first-set tiebreaker to go up 1-0 with a 7-1 tiebreaker victory.
The No. 1 players again went to a tiebreaker in the second set, with the two battling to a 6-all tie in the tiebreaker. Ante eventually won the next two points to put an end to the dual.
MSU's Ekaterina Donetskova also played a competitive match at the No. 2 position. After only dropping serve once in her first set against the Bulldogs' Summer Brills, Donetskova was unable to push through in the second set, falling 6-4, 6-2.
Two other Bears, Anelisse Torrico Moreno and Miranda Poile, also won two and three games, respectively, in matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Both lost in straight sets.
Abbey Belote moved up to No. 5 singles for the first time this season for the Bears and Rebecca McIsaac played her second singles match in dual play this spring.
The Bears conclude their regular season with a dual against Northern Iowa at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 19, at the Black Hawk Tennis Center in Waterloo, Iowa.
