OMAHA, Neb. - Missouri State and Creighton split in singles, but the Blue Jays' opening team point in doubles proved to be the difference in a 4-3 defeat over the Bears in women's tennis at the Hanscom Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 27.
With Creighton (5-8) earning victories in all three doubles matches, MSU (2-6) began singles down 1-0, but played competitively in almost every match - with four of the six singles matchups going three sets.
Bears sophomore Mackenzie Rozell tied the team score at 1-1 behind a straight sets 6-4, 6-1, win over Darby Rosette at the No. 3 slot. It was her second-straight singles victory which improved her dual record to 3-5 this season.
MSU freshman Rebecca McIsaac made her spring singles debut at No. 6 singles, but Creighton's Liz Vermillion won 6-2 in consecutive sets to put the Blue Jays on top, 2-1.
Freshman Anelisse Torrico Moreno played her first three-set match of the season at No. 4 singles for the Bears. Despite dropping the first set to Natalie Miller, Torrico Moreno won the next two 6-3, 6-2, to extend her singles-winning streak to six and tie the dual at 2-2.
Both Ema Tururija and Ekaterina Donetskova won a set apiece to force a third set at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, but were unable to hold off the Blue Jays as Creighton won at both spots to clinch the eventual team victory.
MSU junior Miranda Poile concluded the dual with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, win at the No. 5 slot to help the Bears split in singles.
