SPRINGFIELD - The Missouri State women's tennis team earned victories at No. 5 singles and No. 1 doubles as the Bears dropped their home opener to Arkansas State, 6-1, on Friday, Feb. 20, at Cooper Tennis Complex.

"It was great to have a home match and have quite a few fans out here for a Friday morning meet," head coach Mallory Weber said. "That was great to see. The girls were definitely excited to be at home."

MSU (1-5) was competitive in each doubles match against the Red Wolves (2-4) in its first home dual since the program was discontinued in 2006.

The No. 1 doubles team of Miranda Poile and Ema Turudija earned the only victory for the Bears in doubles, registering an 8-6 win over ASU's Julie Gauguery and Victoria Pisani.

The Bears' No. 2 doubles pairing of Ekaterina Donetskova/Anelisse Torrico Moreno and the No. 3 duo of Mackenzie Rozell/Rebecca McIsaac each lost their respective matches, 8-4.

Torrico Moreno's singles matchup was the final contest to finish Friday, but the freshman eventually defeated the Red Wolves' Sabina Jeresic 7-5, 6-1, in straight sets at No. 5 singles. The win was her fourth straight after starting the season 0-2 in dual play.

The Bears had opportunities in four other singles matches to win sets.

In the No. 2 slot, Ekaterina Donetskova was blanked in the first set, but played deep into the second set before losing 7-5. Rozell and Belote each recovered in No. 2 and No. 6 singles, respectively, to fall 6-4 in their second sets. Poile lost her match at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-2.

Missouri State's women's tennis team wraps up weekend play with back-to-back duals at home. MSU returns to Cooper Tennis Complex at 3 p.m. Saturday to take on the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in a nonconference match.

"We need to keep getting better and keep improving and it's good that we have a quick turnaround," Weber said. "We get to go back out tomorrow and improve some things and have a chance to compete well."
