O'FALLON, Ill. - Missouri State junior Miranda Poile and freshman Anelisse Torrico Moreno both won their third singles matches of the spring, but the Bears' women's tennis team fell 5-2 to the Saint Louis Billikens at the Saint Clair Tennis Club on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
Torrico Moreno earned her third-straight victory in a tough match at No. 5 singles. After winning the first set 6-2 and dropping the second 6-1, Torrico Moreno and Saint Louis' Maria Toro went to a third-set match tiebreaker, where Torrico Moreno went on to clinch the 10-6 triumph.
Poile won her third match as a Bear at No. 4 singles by holding serve and breaking the Billiken's Madison Cook's serve twice. She helped MSU pick up a point behind a straight-sets 6-4, 7-5, win.
The Billikens (5-2) won the remaining four team points in singles to help them defeat the Bears in the nonconference dual.
Despite SLU picking up the doubles point, MSU's No. 1 doubles tandem of Ema Turudija and Miranda Poile led the Billikens' Cook and Aspen Cervin, 5-4, before the match was ended unfinished.
The Bears (1-4) return to Springfield to host their first two duals of the spring season against Arkansas State and South Dakota State. MSU opens the homestand with an 11 a.m. dual at Cooper Tennis Complex indoors on Friday, Feb. 20, versus the Red Wolves. The Bears finish weekend play with a 3 p.m. matchup with the Jackrabbits Saturday at Cooper Tennis Complex.
