EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Miranda Poile earned her first singles victory as a Bear and Mackenzie Rozell forced a tiebreaker, but the Missouri State women's tennis team was defeated by the SIU Edwardsville Cougars 5-2 at the Edwardsville YMCA Sunday, Feb. 1.
The Cougars began the dual by earning the doubles point by winning both the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, 6-2.
In singles, MSU had several standout performances.
MSU junior Miranda Poile picked up a victory for the Bears at No. 4 singles. She beat SIUE's Haley Ilcewicz 6-4, 6-1, in straight sets to earn MSU a point.
Sophomore Mackenzie Rozell took the Cougars' Mia Frogner in No. 2 singles to a first-set tiebreaker, but lost 7-4 and fell in the second set 6-3. MSU freshman Abbey Belote won by forfeit in No. 6 singles.
Both Ekaterina Donetskova and Anelisse Torrico Moreno lost serve in 6-4 and 7-5 defeats in sets in their respective No. 3 and No. 5 singles matches. In No. 1 singles, Ema Turudija was swept in her first set against SIUE's Lexi Aranda, but competed in the second set to fall 6-3.
"Today was a solid start to our season," head coach Mallory Weber said. "We gave ourselves opportunities but couldn't capitalize. We will keep working on staying mentally tough to get better in those big moments."
The Missouri State women's tennis team heads to Columbia for their next dual against the Missouri Tigers beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. The Bears follow that with an 11 a.m. Sunday dual with IUPUI in Columbia.
