SPRINGFIELD - The Missouri State Bears play their only preseason exhibition game of the upcoming season this Saturday when coach Paul Lusk's squad entertains William Jewell College at 2 p.m., at JQH Arena.
Jewell is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference where coach Larry Holley begins his 38th year as coach of the Cardinals. WJC was 13-14 a year ago and 9-9 in the GLVC. The club returns nine lettermen and two starters, including Darius Tomlin, a 5-foot-9 guard who averaged 10.9 points last season with a team-high 55 assists.
Lusk begins his fifth season at the helm of the Bears with a bevy of new talent to complement his five returning starters and seven returning lettermen.
The Bears' returning player of the year Camyn Boone started 30 games last season and averaged team-bests 8.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game with 25 blocked shots. Fellow senior Dorrian Williams, an MVC Most-Improved Team selection in 2015, logged 29 starts last season and averaged 7.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. The Bears also return fellow starters in junior Austin Ruder (8.5 ppg, 56 3-pointers), sophomore Chris Kendrix (6.3 ppg) and the team's third senior, Loomis Gerring (4.7 ppg).
Junior newcomers Dequon Miller (5-10, 171, G) and Jordan Martin (6-9, 240, F) lead a cast of five new faces to the MSU program, along with a talented freshman crop that includes Obediah Church (6-7, 211, F), Jarred Dixon (6-2, 164, G) and Ryan Kreklow (6-4, 176, G).
The 104th season of Bears basketball officially begins with the club's first regular-season game, a 7 p.m. tipoff at Oral Roberts on Nov. 13 in Tulsa.
