St. LOUIS -- The awards continued to roll in for Missouri State's Lily Johnson Tuesday (Oct. 6), as she was honored with her second consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week accolade, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin announced.
The sophomore outside hitter, who carries a 3.98 cumulative grade point average in cell and molecular biology, was selected for her performance during the period of Sept. 28-Oct. 4. Johnson is also the MVC's Defensive Player of the Week in volleyball, a week after earning Player of the Week honors.
Johnson registered the first 20-kill, 20-dig match for Missouri State (12-5, 3-1 MVC) in nearly a decade Friday at Wichita State, finishing with 20 kills and 21 digs in the Bears' 3-1 victory. It was MSU's first 20-20 match since 2006, and the first time since 2002 that a player managed that feat in fewer than five sets.
The Wildwood, Mo., native had at least four kills and four digs in every set, adding one block and one service ace to average 5.00 kills, 5.25 digs, and 5.38 points for the match. Johnson finished with a .250 hitting percentage, including six kills on .313 hitting in the final period.
Johnson's male counterpart award winner this week is Drake cross country runner Reed Fischer. To qualify for MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
