SPRINGFIELD - Senior Holly Scherer scored her team-leading sixth goal and freshman Emily Tran notched her first-career goal as Missouri State field hockey topped Saint Louis 2-0 in nonconference play Sunday, Oct. 4, at Betty and Bobby Allison North Stadium.
The Bears swept the season series and improved to 3-9 this year by outshooting the Billikens (0-13) 20-6 in the contest.
Missouri State scored the eventual game-winning goal within the first four minutes of the game.
After the first shot of the match by MSU sophomore Andrea Soler Codina went wide, the Saint Louis defense lost possession and turned the ball over to Scherer. From there, the forward went one-on-one against Billikens goalkeeper Tori Westhead and put a shot past Westhead's left side to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
MSU continued pressure throughout the first half and had a 12-2 edge in shots heading into halftime.
Bears freshman goalkeeper Feli Heinzel made both of her saves in the second half as both teams battled for possession. Saint Louis pulled its goalkeeper with three minutes to play and MSU was able to convert with the advantage in the final minute of action.
Tran found the back of the net thanks to a pass from senior Sydney Richelieu to the front of the net. Richeleiu was set up with a pass from senior Charlie Redhead from the top of the circle, with both registering assists on Tran's tip-in goal to seal the game in the 70th minute.
MSU's Heinzel earned her second win of the season in goal behind her second clean sheet of her career. The Bears' attack led to a 12-4 edge in penalty corners and forced Saint Louis' Westhead to make eight saves.
Scherer led the way for MSU with six shots, while Redhead was right behind her with five. Richelieu, Dominique Leyva, Patrice Ahl, Liz Young, Leah Reitmayer and Bianca Mills all had shots for the Bears Sunday.
Missouri State returns to Mid-American Conference games for its remaining five matchups of the 2015 season. The Bears host two MAC games at Betty and Bobby Allison North Stadium next weekend, beginning with a 4 p.m. contest versus Ohio Friday, Oct. 9. MSU follows that with another home game against Kent state Sunday, Oct. 11, at 12 p.m.
