SPRINGFIELD -- Wichita State used an efficient offense and solid floor defense to earn a 3-0 win over Missouri State Saturday evening at Hammons Student Center. The Shockers won by set scores of 25-14, 25-20, 25-21 to improve to 19-6 overall and 10-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play. MSU moved to 15-9 and 6-5 in league play.
MSU fell behind early in each set, beginning with an 8-3 deficit to open the match as the Shockers hit .351 and held a 14-5 advantage in kills in the first period. WSU then used a 7-1 run to lead 12-6 in the second set, keeping the margin at three points or more for the remainer of the frame for a 2-0 set lead.
The Bears jumped ahead 4-1 in the third period before the Shockers ripped off a 9-1 run to lead 10-5. Simone House's kill pulled Missouri State within 10-8, but WSU countered with a 4-0 run and led by at least three points for the rest of the match.
Lynsey Wright led MSU with seven kills and added a career-high eight digs, though the Shockers owned a .331-.161 advantage in hitting percentage and 49-34 lead in kills. House had six kills and no errors, and Kinsey Batten finished with six kills, 24 assists and nine digs.
Lily Johnson's school-record streak of 36 consecutive matches with at least 10 kills came to an end as the sophomore tallied six kills. It was the first time since Oct. 13, 2014, that she failed to reach double figures, and also ended a similar streak of 26 straight matches against MVC foes.
Missouri State visits Evansville (8-18, 2-10) on Monday for a 7 p.m. first serve.
