SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Missouri State's No. 3 doubles team won in a tiebreaker and senior Miranda Poile took her singles match in straight sets to highlight the Bears' second-day efforts Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Tennis Individual Championship at the Velasco Tennis Center.
Sophomore Anelisse Torrico Moreno and freshman Phoebe Boeschen advanced to the finals at No. 3 doubles for the Bears with a tiebreaker victory. In a matchup against Illinois State's Chanel Scudiero and Catherine Shulman, the Missouri State duo prevailed 8-7 (5) to set up a finals showdown with Bradley's Ariel Dechter and Irinka Toidze.
The Bears also went to tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles but were unable to come away with a win. MSU's tandem of Ema Turudija and Poile tied their match at 7-all with Drake's Adrienne Jensen and Maddie Johnson, but the Bulldogs' doubles team took the tiebreaker 7-2.
Poile was the lone MSU tennis player to advance to finals action in singles. She defeated Summer Shlotterback 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 5 slot Saturday to set up a finals contest versus Aimee Manfredo of Bradley Sunday.
Three Bears - Turudija, Ekaterina Donetskova and Boeschen - lost semifinal matches at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, and will now compete in third-place matchups.
Sophomore Abbey Belote finished her tournament appearance with a victory in the fifth place match at No. 7 singles. Belote defeated Evansville's Elizabeth Mendes 6-1, 6-1 to complete the Championship with a 2-1 record.
Torrico Moreno also wrapped up her singles appearance at the tournament in a fifth-place contest. The sophomore won her first set against Northern Iowa's Gisela Kemper, but Kemper eventually took the second set and won in a third-set match tiebreaker for a 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 final line.
The last day of the MVC Women's Tennis Individual Championship continues at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Velasco Tennis Center in Springfield, Illinois. Fifth place, third place and finals in doubles begin action on Sunday, followed by singles flights' third- and first-place contests.
